Short Breaks in Alnwick
Alnwick is a market town in the North-East of England. It sits between the North-East Coast and the beautiful Northumberland National Park. It is just 5 miles from the sea and 32 miles south of the Scottish border and is a perfect destination for a family self-catering holiday, having endless opportunities for outdoor fun and historical adventure.
Its most famous attraction is the stunning Alnwick Castle, an ideal centrepiece for a Culture and History Short Break, and famously used as a film location for both the Harry Potter films and Elizabeth. The castle is open to the public, offering numerous activities and events for all ages, including archery, jousting, falconry and a dressing up ‘knights and princesses’ Dragon Quest for children. You can also enjoy its magnificent art collection, which contains work by Titian, Turner, Canaletto and Van Dyck. After visiting Alnwick Castle, history and culture lovers will find plenty more of interest among the many leading National Trust locations in Northumberland. These include Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island and the impressive 19thcentury Cragside House.
To the west of Alnwick is the Northumberland National Park providing miles and miles of unspoilt wilderness for those wanting to enjoy an Activity Short Break or a Wildlife Short Break. This landscape of hills, valleys, rivers and woodland is perfect for pursuits such as bird watching, cycling and walking. In addition, boating, fishing and other water sports are available on the park’s Kielder Water, the largest reservoir lake in North-West Europe.
In early August every year, Alnwick becomes a vibrant centre of music and culture, when the annual Alnwick International Music Festival takes place with its 8 days of music, dancing and costume from around the world.
Among our Alnwick holiday lettings properties are a sumptuous manor house, complete with swimming pool and tennis courts, and several coastal cottages, just a few minutes from the sea.
