Short Breaks in Aylesbury
Located at the foot of the Chiltern Hills and surrounded by rolling farm land, Aylesbury is the county town of Buckinghamshire in central southern England. The town has a lively night life with a good array of pubs, bars and nightclubs, as well as events at the Aylesbury Waterside Theatre. Cycling is a great way to explore the town with its dedicated cycle routes known as the Gem Stone Cycle Ways. The countryside surrounding the town is also ideal for cycling and walking, and there are many charming villages nearby with pubs and tearooms for refreshment.
Families will find plenty of interest in the area such as the delightful Roald Dahl Children’s Gallery, an interactive ‘hands on’ museum, enlivened by themes from Roald Dahl’s children’s books. Examples of the region’s famous white Aylesbury ducks can be seen at the Oak Farm Rare Breeds Park, while goats, donkeys, llamas and birds can be enjoyed at the Bucks Goats Centre, just outside the town.
Aylesbury has fine examples of medieval, Georgian and Victorian architecture and frequent open air markets still take place in the town’s cobbled market square, which dates back to the 13th century. A little further afield at Waddeson, you will find the breath-taking Waddeson Manor, a 19th century stately home, built in the style of a lavish French chateau. Once owned by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, Waddeson Manor is full of magnificent art treasures and fine French furniture. It is also noted for its elegant, formal garden which has fountains, statues and an aviary. Another spectacular garden is the landscaped garden at Stowe, 18 miles north of Aylesbury. This beautiful 18th century garden combines features such as lakes, valleys and neo-classical temples.
