Short Breaks in Bermondsey
Bermondsey is an area on the South Bank of the Thames in London. It makes a fantastic base from which to explore many of the city’s wonderful attractions. From Bermondsey, a host of cultural landmarks are within a short walk or taxi ride. Among them are Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, the Tate Modern art gallery, The National Theatre, The Royal Festival Hall and The National Film Theatre. Other popular nearby attractions include The London Dungeon, HMS Belfast - a battle ship moored in the Thames, the Bermondsey Antiques Market and the Bermondsey Fashion and Textiles Museum.
During the 19th century the waterfront at Bermondsey was an infamous slum, vividly described in Charles Dickens’ novel, Oliver Twist; however, today it is known for having some of the most expensive properties in London. As a sought after location, there are numerous up-market and cosmopolitan restaurants to choose from in the area such as Pont De La Tour, near Tower Bridge, with its fine French food and fantastic city views. President Bill Clinton and Prime Minister Tony Blair dined at the restaurant together in 1997.
