Short Breaks in Criccieth
The Welsh town of Criccieth is in the county of Gwynedd and lies on Cardigan Bay.
A seaside resort since Victorian times, Criccieth is divided into two areas - the Marine Beach and East Shore - by an outcrop of rock on which stands the ruins of Criccieth Castle. The castle and shores offer extensive picture-postcard views of both the town and the surrounding Welsh countryside.
Although the town is mainly of Victorian design, there are many examples of early town buildings, some dating back from the 16th century such as the former public house of Ty Mawr. In the centre of the town is Y Maes, part of the original town common which dates back to medieval times.
Places to visit in the area aside from a trip to the castle include a visit to Cadwalladers - famous all over Wales for its ice cream, the Art Nouveau inspired Memorial Hall and the nearby David Lloyd George museum in Llanystumdwy. Criccieth is also only a short distance from Snowdonia National Park and the famous Ffestiniog Mountain Railway, the Italian-themed village and pottery of Portmerion and the mountain splendour of Beddgelert.
