Short Breaks in Lanark

Lanarkshire

Lanarkshire is situated in the south of Scotland and although largely rural it is within easy reach of the city of Glasgow. Lanarkshire has a wealth of country parks offering a wide range of outdoor activities for all. Drumpelier Country Park and Palacerigg Country Park are a must for wildlife enthusiasts with roe deer, sparrowhawks, kestrels and owls being just some of the animals that are commonly spotted. Calderglen Country Park is known for its beautiful wooded glen and waterfalls, while in contrast a more rugged bogland landscape can be found at the Langlends Moss Nature reserve. A host of activities are on offer in the Lanarkshire area, including hot air ballooning, paragliding, course fishing and microlight flying. For walkers and cyclists there are several dedicated trails to choose from, among them are the Carron Valley Mountain Bike Trails and The Antonine Wall and Forth and Clyde Canal Walk.

Lanarkshire is proud to possess Bothwell Castle, the largest stone castle in Scotland and at the New Lanark World Heritage Site, a beautifully preserved early nineteenth century utopian village can be seen, centred around the mill that was the hub of the community. The Annie McLeod Experience at New Lanark is popular with visitors in which a virtual ghost of a girl that worked at the mill acts as your guide to its history.
