Short Breaks in Llanelli
Llanelli is a town sitting on the banks of the Loughor Estuary in South West Wales. The Millenium Coastal Path can be joined at Llanelli and offers a traffic free route for cyclists and walkers to enjoy 22 miles of Carmarthenshire coastline. Just outside Llanelli, you will find the Pembrey Country Park which offers 202 hectares of parkland and access to some of the cleanest beaches in wales.
To the north of Llanelli is Parc Howard, a nineteenth century Italianate mansion and park. The house is home to an extensive collection of Llanelly Pottery and the park has a recently restored bandstand, tennis courts, a children’s play area and a bowling green.
Llanelli is famed for its long connection with rugby, going back to 1875 when the Llanelli Rugby Football Club was founded. The Llanelli Rugby Club team is fondly known as ‘The Scarlets’ and until recently was housed at their historic home ground of Stradey Park, but is now based at the Parc Y Scarlets at nearby Pemberton.
Llanelli holds numerous festivals and competitions each year, including the Llanelli Beer Festival, the Llanelli Big Day Out live music festival, the Into the Future environment and technology festival and the Welsh International Open bowls competition. Llanelli has 3 golf courses, including the Machynys Peninsula Golf and Country Club where the Wales Ladies Championship is held each year.
The Llanelli Festival of Walks is becoming an increasing popular event, attracting hundreds of keen walkers to the area each May. The Gelli Aur Country Park, Dinefwr Castle and Park, and Whitland Abbey are all areas that offer local scenic walks.
