Short Breaks in Machynlleth
The market town of Machynlleth lies in the county of Powys in Wales.
Historically the town was once the seat of Owain Glyndŵr's Welsh Parliament and is unofficially regarded as Wales's ancient capital. The town still has relics of its medieval history - Royal House and Parliament House being notable examples - and Machynlleth's market has been held regularly in Maengwyn Street each week for over 700 years. Maengwyn Street also has a varied choice of cafes and restaurants where you can try the local food after visiting the stalls. At the centre of the town is its impressive Victorian town clock which is well worth a look. The town has a large Welsh speaking contingent with nearly half the population able to speak or write the language.
Machynlleth lies close to the Dyfi estuary which passes through on its way to Cardigan Bay. Nearby Dyfi forest and the Dovey Valley offer scenic walks and there are also trails specifically for mountain bikers to take in the sights and stunning hillside views.
Other attractions within easy reach include Clywedog Reservoir which offers fishing and sailing opportunities, the Tal-y-Llyn & Vale of Rheidol Railways, as well as all that the Snowdonia National Park has to offer. Machynlleth is also close to other tourist towns such as Dolgellau and the seaside resorts of Aberdyfi and Aberystwyth.
