Short Breaks in Melrose
Roxburghshire
Roxburghshire sits in the south-east corner of Scotland. There are many fascinating historical landmarks to visit in the area. Floors Castle, the largest inhabited stately home in Scotland has an impressive collection of 17th century art and furniture, as well as offering an adventure playground, and woodland and riverside walks with stunning views.
The dramatic silhouette of Smailholm Tower above its rugged landscape is another memorable historical sight and is known to have been an inspiration to the famous Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott. Abbotsford House is also popular with visitors; designed in the baronial style, it was built by Scott in the early nineteenth century. Queen Victoria visited Scott at Abbotsford and its style influenced her development of Balmoral Castle, still the Scottish summer residence of the British Monarchy.
For walkers there are several interesting and beautiful routes in Roxburghshire. The Border Abbeys Way provides a circular route taking in four ruined abbeys at Kelso, Jedburgh, Melrose and Dryburgh, and for cyclists there is the Tweed Cycle Way and the 250 Mile Borderloop. Keen golfers will find 21 golf courses to choose from in the region and salmon and trout fishing is also widely available.
