Short Breaks in Pembroke
Pembroke is a large town located in the county of Pembrokeshire in the west of Wales. It lies on the Cleddau estuary and its name derives from Penfro (loosely meaning land's end).
The town has a lot of history and is dominated by the impressive structure that is Pembroke Castle, the fortification that dominates the town and which has existed in one form or another since Norman times. The English King Henry VII was also born in the castle in the late 15th century. Much of the original Town Wall still stands; Pembroke at one time being a completely walled town. The main street in Pembroke is a diverse mix of architectural styles which includes Georgian and Tudor buildings. The remains of Monkton Priory - a former Benedictine priory - can also be found in the locality.
To the north is Pembroke Dock, a separate town which sprung up in the 19th century and which once had a Royal Dockyard. It is nowadays known for its waterways and water-sport activities such as sailing and water-skiing.
Within easy reach of the town are the popular seaside resort of Tenby; the nearby port of Milford Haven; the splendid ruins of the Bishop's Palace in Lamphey and the natural beauty of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.
