Short Breaks in Portsmouth
Steeped in nautical history, Portsmouth is a city on the south coast of England in Hampshire. For many centuries it has been an important port and famous ships such as Nelson’s HMS Victory, the Mary Rose and HMS Warrior can be seen at the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, complemented by the adjoining National Museum of the Royal Navy. Because of all the maritime heritage on offer in the area, Portsmouth is a very popular destination for taking a short break. Holiday accommodation on offer in the town ranges from large apartments to beautiful Georgian houses.
Just a short walk from the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, you will find the glamorous buzz of Gunwharf Quays, a contemporary waterside development overlooking a marina and the stunning 170 metre Spinnaker Tower. Gunwharf Quays houses an exciting range of shops and restaurants, plus a health and fitness centre, a 14 screen cinema, a bowling complex, a night club and a comedy club.
Portsmouth has two theatres, the New Theatre Royal and the Kings Theatre, and many concerts are held at the Portsmouth Guildhall.
Portsmouth Harbour provides numerous passenger ferry services to the Isle of Wight, France, Spain and the Channel Islands. A hovercraft service for foot passengers runs regularly to the Isle of Wight making the island easily accessible for a day trip.
Popular family attractions include the Blue Reef Aquarium with its giant tropical reef tank and underwater walk-through tunnel, and the Clarence Pier Amusement Park at Southsea offering a high ropes course and an indoor adventure playground.
