Short Breaks in Renfrewshire

Renfrewshire is situated in the western central area of Scotland, south-west of Glasgow and south of the River Clyde. Convenient for travellers, Glasgow International Airport is in Renfrewshire. Paisley is the largest town in the county and is famous for its heritage as a prominent textiles producer in the 19th century, in particular for its Paisley Shawls with their distinctive multi-coloured swirling patterns. A collection of the beautiful shawls can be seen at the Paisley Museum, along with other treasures such as artefacts from ancient Egypt.

The Paisley Arts Centre is a vibrant hub for the arts and has a very busy programme of performances by touring theatre companies. For those with an interest in astronomy the Coats Observatory is open to the public and well worth a visit. The Sma'Shot Cottages in Shuttle Street are carefully preserved 18th century weavers' cottages, where visitors can get a vivid glimpse of life in another age.

For outdoor pursuits, the countryside of Renfrewshire has many attractions, such as the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park, the Gleniffer Braes Country Park, Jenny's Well Nature Reserve, and the Paisley Moss Nature Reserve. Boat hire, bike hire, camping, walking and cycling are all on offer at the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park, while at Castle Semple Loch, which lies within the park, instructors for sailing, kayaking, canoeing and raft building are also available. In addition, The Castle Semple Temple and The Castle Semple Collegiate Church add historical interest to the landscape in this area. The Gleniffer Braes Country Park has stunning panoramic views and the dramatic Gleniffer Gorge has a magnificent waterfall.
