Short Breaks in Rutland
Rutland is a county in central England. It is also the smallest county on the English mainland measuring only 17 miles across! Predominantly a county of villages and hamlets, the county town is Oakham and its only other town is Uppingham.
At the centre of the county is the impressive man-made reservoir of Rutland Water. As well as partly being a nature reserve and therefore popular with birdwatchers - it is a well known breeding site for ospreys - it also appeals to people who enjoy outdoor pursuits such as sailing, fishing and walking. There are also pleasure cruises available to view the lake.
Other attractions in the area include Barnsdale Gardens, the medieval splendour of Lyddington Bede House and the Rutland Railway Museum where a trip on the heritage railway is well advised!
