Short Breaks in Rye
Rye is a small town in East Sussex, just 2 miles inland from the coast. The town looks out across Romney Marsh and is known for its picturesque cobbled streets and period architecture. Built in the 13th century, Rye Castle and the Ypres Tower are both open to the public.
Peaceful moorings are available on the tidal River Brede and are within easy walking distance of the town, while Rye Harbour provides moorings further downstream towards the coast. The town is an ideal base for walkers, with routes through Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, and out towards Camber Castle and Camber Sands. Bicycles are available for hire in Rye, providing easy transport to places such as Romney Marsh and Dungeness.
Rye has a number of literary associations and has been lived in by both Henry James and Rumer Godden. Many artists and photographers are inspired by the Rye area, and several galleries in the town exhibit their art work.
