Short Breaks in Stamford
Stamford is a town in Lincolnshire in the south east of England and lies on the River Welland. It is approximately 100 miles from London and lies on the major A1 road - once an historical coach route leading on to York and Edinburgh.
The history of Stamford can be seen in the many listed buildings which still stand in the town - from the timber-framed buildings of Tudor times to the sturdy stone buildings of the 1700's. The centre of the town has many fine pubs and restaurants offering real ale and fine cuisine, it also has no less than five medieval churches.
There is much else to see and do in and around the town such as a visit to Burghley House, one of the finest Elizabethan residences in the country and also the location of the famous Burghley Horse Trials which are held there every Autumn. Every summer the house and grounds are opened to the public, offering a chance to view the house and wander around the splendid parks and grounds.
Other attractions include Stamford Meadows - where you can take a leisurely stroll along the River Welland or just relax on the grass with a picnic lunch, the picturesque cobbled street of Barn Hill and the impressive remains of St Leonard's Priory.
