Short Breaks in Tavistock
The elegant market town of Tavistock lies on the banks of the River Tavy at the western edge of Dartmoor. A number of lively festivals are popular with visitors to the town; among them being the Tavistock Goose Fair in October, the Tavistock Food Festival in September, a carnival and balloon fiesta in August, and the Tavistock Music and Arts Festival in May.
Just 6 miles south-east of Tavistock is the 700 year old Buckland Abbey, once home to Sir Francis Drake. It now houses a fascinating interactive museum and offers delightful walks through its orchards and meadows.
At the edge of Dartmoor, Tavistock makes an ideal base for exploring the outstanding natural beauty of the moor and there are endless possibilities for fantastic walks.
West of Tavistock, on the banks of the River Tamar, is Morwhellham Quay, a World Heritage Site, bringing together a Victorian working farm, a copper mine, a railway, heavy horses, a nature reserve and a costume museum, all set in 200 acres of lovely countryside.
