Short Breaks in West Lothian
Close to Edinburgh, West Lothian is located in the south-east of Scotland. It offers many areas of beautiful countryside for walking, cycling, camping and horse riding. Among these are the Beecraigs Country Park, where deer farming can be seen; Polkemmet Country Park which includes a golf course and the Harperrig Reservoir with the striking Cairns Castle rising up from its banks. Another enjoyable way to explore West Lothian is to take a canal boat cruise from the Linlithgow Canal Centre to travel across the Avon aqueduct, the longest and highest aqueduct in Scotland.
West Lothian is rich with historical interest such as Hopetoun House, a stunning stately home set in 150 acres of parkland; the still impressive, although ruined, Linlithgow Palace where Mary Queen of Scots was born and the prehistoric burial mound at Cairnpapple Hill. Families will particularly enjoy the Almond Valley Heritage Centre which has something for everyone; be it the farm animals, the working water mill, the tractor rides, the museum or the narrow-gauge railway. The Five Sisters Zoo at West Calder is also a great destination for a day out with children.
