Caithness

Caithness is in the north east Highlands of Scotland with a stunning coastline that has a range of picturesque harbours and inlets, as well as dramatic cliff top views. Sea fishing trips are very popular here, along with watching out for unusual wildlife including whales, seals, dolphins and porpoises. Inland the landscape is characterised by rolling moorland, providing many opportunities for walking, cycling and horse riding. A 20 mile circular route for walkers and horse riders is now open via a new bridge at Loch More.

Throughout the summer there are numerous galas and highland games events. These are traditional Scottish country fairs consisting of sporting and animal show ground competitions, plus traditional music and dancing displays. Notable amongst these are the Halkirk Highland Games, the Thurso Gala and the Caithness country show.

Live music is a frequent feature of life in Caithness, in particular Highland piped bands and traditional fiddle music. A multitude of ruined castles are dotted across this region, as well as a number of prehistoric monuments.  Many local crafts are on offer to the shopper and the area is famous for its production of Caithness glass in the form of fine dining crystal and colourful glass paper weights.
