About Bath

Lying in north-east Somerset, Bath is widely held to be one of the most beautiful cities in England. Noted for its eighteenth century architecture, visitors will find street upon street of Georgian elegance, such as the Royal Crescent, a much photographed sweeping curve of impressive period town houses. The beauty of the city is celebrated by the fact that it was made a World Heritage Site in 1987.

Bath is a busy cultural centre, enjoying a number of museums and theatres. The Theatre Royal runs a lively programme, serving a wide variety of tastes from cutting edge contemporary drama and comedy, to traditional pantomimes and productions of the classics. Local museums include The Roman Baths Museum, The American Museum, The Herschel Museum of Astronomy and The Fashion Museum.

Perhaps Bath's most famous attraction is the Roman Baths. Built by the Romans and developed in later centuries, the Roman Baths are housed in a temple-like building that surrounds the source of a natural hot spring that was used for public bathing. The hot waters from the spring were thought to have therapeutic properties and over the centuries many came to Bath to 'take the waters' to cure medical problems. Adjacent to the Roman Baths are the 18th century Pump Rooms, the main room being a grand Georgian assembly room where visitors can drink the spring water and have coffee, lunch and afternoon tea, often accompanied by a live classical music trio. If you want to actually bathe in the hot spring waters then this can be done at the nearby Thermae Bath Spa, where a favourite treat is to sit in the hot waters of the open air roof top pool whilst enjoying spectacular views of the city.

Other popular leisure pursuits in Bath are canal boat trips along the Kennet and Avon Canal, and watching a Rugby Match at the Bath Rugby Club grounds. Bath has many literary associations and much of Jane Austen’s novels, Persuasion and Northanger Abbey, are set in the city.
