Stratford-upon-Avon is a market town in the county of Warwickshire, in the Midlands region of England. It is best known for being the birthplace and home of the sixteenth century playwright and poet, William Shakespeare, and many visitors come to see the historic settings associated with his life, such as Anne Hathaway's Cottage, The Gardens of New Place, Shakespeare's Birthplace itself, Hall's Croft and the Holy Trinity Church where Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway are buried. The Royal Shakespeare Company is based in Stratford-upon-Avon and an exciting repertoire of Shakespeare’s plays is performed at its Royal Shakespeare Theatre, where many of Britain's most eminent actors can be seen in performance.
One of the best ways to see Stratford is from the River Avon, which glides past many of the town's attractions, such as the lovely Bancroft Gardens, next door to The Royal Shakespeare Theatre. You can take a river cruise, hire a boat or walk along the riverside paths. The Stratford Brass Rubbing Centre and The Stratford-Upon-Avon Butterfly Farm and Jungle Safari are also popular.
Stratford is host to a number of festivals, among them being The Stratford Food Festival, The Stratford Music Festival and The Stratford Folk Festival.
Because of all the rich cultural heritage on offer in the area, Stratford-upon-Avon is a very popular destination for taking a short break. A choice of holiday accommodation in the town could range from a riverside studio apartment to one of Stratford's beautiful listed buildings.
Further afield, just 8 miles from Stratford-upon-Avon, is the county town of Warwick, where you can visit the medieval Warwick Castle with its formidable battlements and towers. The castle has much to offer the whole family, including jousting events, medieval banquets, dungeon tours and firework displays.
