About Devon

Devon, or Devonshire, is a large county in south west England and the third largest in the country. It has separate coastlines on both the north and south of the county - the only English county to do so. The geography varies from the wild, vast moors and tors of Dartmoor to the rolling hills of South Devon and the coastal beauty of the English Riviera resort of Torbay.

Although predominately a rural county, its county town is the city of Exeter. Its other major city is Plymouth on the south coast. Other towns include Bideford, Barnstaple, Newton Abbot and Exmouth. The county boasts many seaside resorts - Dawlish, Sidmouth, Westward Ho! and Exmouth being but a few.

Places to visit in Devon include Powderham Castle and its beautiful location, the Benedictine monastery at Buckfast Abbey, the natural beauty of Lydford Gorge, a trip back in time to the Victorian port of Morwellham Quay or a ride up the North Devon cliffs on the Lynton and Lynmouth funicular railway. There are also many pretty villages in Devon where you can enjoy the famous Devonshire cream tea of scones, jam and clotted cream!
