About Oakham

Oakham is the county town of Rutland in the south-east corner of the Midlands. It is a charming market town and has been a winner of the Britain in Bloom Award for its floral displays. Features of historical interest include Oakham Castle, the Oakham Signal Box and the architecture of Oakham School.

The nearby Rutland Water offers numerous opportunities for outdoor pursuits. Set in 4200 acres of countryside the reservoir lake has a 40km circular track, ideal for walkers and cyclists, and bicycles can be hired from a number of outlets. Fishing and bird watching can also be enjoyed at Rutland Water and canoeing, sailing and windsurfing is available at the Rutland Watersports Centre at the northern edge of the water. At Whitewell, outdoor pursuits such as high ropes and climbing courses can also be found and cruises on the lake can be taken on the pleasure boat named the Rutland Belle.

A wide variety of cultural events take place in the Oakham area such as Tolethorpe Hall Open Air Theatre at Stamford, the Burghley House Festival of Surprises, the British Birdwatching Fair ‘BirdFair’, The Grainstore Brewery Beer Festival, classical concerts at Lyddington and the Rutland Food Festival.

Country pursuits are celebrated at the Rockingham Castle Country Fair and the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials at Burghley House.
