Cumbria is a county in the North West of England and is mostly associated with the stunning natural beauty of the Lake District. It boasts the highest peak in England - Scafell Pike - and also includes the historic fortifications of Hadrian's Wall, which can be found in the northernmost reaches of the county. Major towns and cities include the county town of Carlisle, Barrow-in-Furness, Whitehaven and Kendal - famous for its mint cake.
Famous areas of the Lake District include the towns of Ambleside, Bowness-on-Windermere and Keswick and the lakes of Coniston Water, Derwent Water, Grasmere and Windermere. It is an area very popular with walkers as is the Coast to Coast walk which starts west from the coast at St Bees and ends at Robin Hood's Bay in Yorkshire.
Among the other places of interest in Cumbria are the pictures of the Beatrix Potter Gallery, the historic Carlisle Cathedral, and the breathtaking coastal views from the St Bees lighthouse.Read More...
