Holiday Properties in Sherborne

Sherborne is a pretty, market town in the North-West of Dorset. It is memorable for its many historic buildings made from the local, golden Ham Stone. Dominating the sky line of the town is Sherborne Abbey, which dates back to the 998AD. Viewed from inside, the Abbey roof is a particularly beautiful example of gothic architecture.

The town has two castles that are open to the public, the Old Castle and Sherborne Castle, both having been previously owned by Sir Walter Raleigh, the famous Elizabethan explorer and poet. The Old Castle is now an atmospheric ruin owned by English Heritage and Sherborne Castle is a well preserved, lakeside Elizabethan mansion, which is frequently used as a venue for many popular events such as firework displays, open air concerts and plays, country fairs and sporting competitions.

Sherborne has many charming shops and cafes, and, a peaceful park known as the Pageant Gardens. It has a railway station that provides a direct line to London.

At the heart of the town is Sherborne School, a well-known independent school for boys. Sherborne School owns a number of fine historic buildings in Sherborne, and was used as a filming location for the classic 1969 film, Goodbye Mr Chips, starring Peter O'Toole and Petula Clarke. On the edge of the town is Sherborne Girls school which, within its Oxley Sports Centre, has a swimming pool that is open to the public.

Sherborne is an excellent location for walking or cycling holidays, being in easy reach of many beautiful and unspoilt areas of the Dorset countryside, such as the hills near the Cerne Giant at Cerne Abbas, Corton Denham Ridge and Cadbury Castle at South Cadbury.
