Cottage Holidays in Cheltenham

Cheltenham is an elegant Regency spa town in Gloucestershire, south-west England. It is characterised by its fine 18th century Georgian architecture, typically featuring Cotswold Stone, classic design proportions and gracious balconies, such as that found in the Grade II listed Lansdown Terrace. The town became popular as a fashionable holiday resort following the discovery of its mineral spring waters in 1716 and the visit of King George III with his family in 1788.

The town enjoys prize winning parks and gardens, a superb choice of shops - from high street names to stylish, independent outlets - and is known for its lively night life, having numerous enticing wine bars, clubs, pubs and restaurants. The Cheltenham Town Hall and the Pittville Pump Room offer a varied and entertaining programme of events including music, drama and comedy performances. Cheltenham is also noted for its busy calendar of Festivals, among them being the Jazz Festival, the Science Festival, the Music Festival, the Comedy Festival and the famous Cheltenham Literary Festival.

On the northern edge of the town is the Cheltenham Race Course, which is host to Britain’s most prestigious event in horse racing – the Cheltenham Festival and The Gold Cup, attracting the country’s leading jockeys, horses and trainers. Other racing fixtures take place regularly from October through to May.

Cheltenham lies on the edge of the Cotswolds and makes an ideal base from which to explore this beautiful range of hills and rolling farmland. The Cotswolds have been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and are excellent for walking, cycling and horse riding. The highest point in the Cotswolds is known as Cleeve Hill, just 4 miles north of Cheltenham.
