Ayrshire lies in the south west of Scotland on the edge of the Firth of Clyde, which is a coastal area of many islands and peninsulas, served by 12 different ferry routes which allow the visitor to explore this region extensively. It is famous for its excellent golf courses, particularly at Prestwick and Troon, where the British Open Golfing Championships have been held many times. Ayrshire's beautiful and varied landscape takes in rugged hills, forests, sandy shores and islands. Much of the countryside is unspoilt and very accessible to visitors, such as the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park, where boats and bicycles are available for hire. Fishing and pony trekking are also popular. Rich in historical interest, Ayrshire boasts 40 castles and was once the outlaw territory of William Wallace made famous in the Mel Gibson film Braveheart.. Ayrshire is easily reached from the nearby Glasgow airport.
