Holiday Destinations in Wigtownshire
Holiday Properties in Wigtownshire
Wigtownshire sits in the south-west corner of Scotland. It contains the southernmost point in Scotland, the Mull of Galloway. This headland is now a nature reserve and is a centre for bird watching, the area being populated by species including guillemots, kittiwakes, peregrines and puffins. Whales, dolphins, seals and porpoises are also sighted near the Mull of Galloway. The county enjoys numerous golf courses including some with stunning sea views.
Because of the warming Gulf Stream that runs along its coast, the area has a surprisingly temperate climate and many sub-tropical plants such as palm trees grow happily in the area. Further, lovely examples of sub-tropical plants can be seen at the Logan Botanic Garden just outside Port Logan. Excellent fishing can be found in Wigtownshire; be it salmon fishing in the rivers or trout fishing in the lochs.
Falconry, walking, cycling and horse riding are also enjoyed in this county with its varied landscape of farmland, coast, moors, forest and rugged hills. In particular, walkers looking for a challenge are drawn to the 212 mile Southern Upland Way that starts in Wigtownshire and goes on into the Galloway Hills. The ferry port at Stranraer allows travellers to easily make a day trip across the Irish Sea to Ireland.
