House Holidays in UK
The United Kingdom (UK) is situated off mainland Europe in the North Atlantic Ocean. It consists of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The scenery ranges from rural English countryside to the Scottish mountains and glens, and from the Welsh Beacons to the Northern Irish coasts and hills. A classic country cottage rental is an enduring self-catering holiday favourite in these locations.
The kingdom has a rich and varied history which is borne out through the many archaeological sites from Roman, Viking and Norman times; as well as the abundance of notable churches and cathedrals from all periods of UK history - some ruins, others still standing. There are also many castles and stately homes now open to the public.
The UK is an excellent destination for a cultural short break holiday, having many art galleries and theatres to enjoy; a legacy of notable writers and poets such as Shakespeare, Arthur Conan Doyle and Dylan Thomas; important artists including Constable, Turner, Augustus John and Charles Rennie Mackintosh and musical influences from traditional folk music through to Elgar and on to the Beatles.
Famous attractions in the UK include the important prehistoric site of Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain, the Houses of Parliament in London, as well as the impressive Northern Ireland parliament buildings at Stormont, the large Scottish lake of Loch Ness, the historic castles of Cardiff and Edinburgh, and the more recent Eden Project in Cornwall.
