Holiday Properties in York

Founded by the Romans in 71 AD, York is a major historical city in North Yorkshire, famous for its fine architecture, picturesque cobbled streets and magnificent gothic cathedral, York Minster. Today the city is the perfect destination for a short break - a vibrant hub of cultural events and café life - and offers a range of accommodation from central apartments to luxury riverside properties.

Surrounding the heart of the city are the medieval city walls providing a delightful 3 mile circular walk. Tourists also enjoy exploring the Snickelways, a network of narrow paths and alley ways that offer an intriguing insight into the life of the city. Five of the Snickelways lead to the Shambles, an unspoilt old street, noted for its overhanging timber-framed buildings, many of them dating back to Medieval and Tudor times and now home to an array of charming shops, cafés and restaurants.

Theatre lovers and concert enthusiasts will find exciting events on offer at York’s Theatre Royal, the Grand Opera House and the Joseph Rowntree Theatre.  The York Medieval Mystery Plays take place every 4 years and are performed on wagons at various locations dotted around the town. York also has a fascinating collection of museums including the Yorkshire Museum and Gardens, JORVIK Viking Centre, the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, the National Railway Museum and the York Castle Museum.

Shopping opportunities in York are excellent and have something for everyone, encompassing a wide range from unique independent shops to high street names and designer labels. York also has an open air daily market with over 100 stalls.

York Race Course is great for a special day and is host to premier horse racing events such as the Coral Sprint Trophy and the Coral Rockingham Stakes.  A great venue for those who like to follow the horses, but also fun for those who just like to ‘people watch’ and relax with a drink amid a buzzing atmosphere.

Just beyond York, there are also many other wonderful attractions, such as the magnificent 18th century Castle Howard and the world heritage site at Fountains Abbey.
